Ric's comments - For three years I saved everything related to my surgeries and treatment. There were bloody bandages, pill bottles, and a one inch piece of dried mucus that had plugged my trach once; I saved everything. Then for a survivors' art show at the first national conference for thyroid cancer survivors' in 1998, I arranged all this stuff, photographed it and made a collage. As soon as I finished, I threw everything away and haven't saved anything since.

Diane's comments - "I knew that Ric was saving these awful pieces of his journey for a reason. The result was his artistic catharsis."
